About COP29
The Conference of the Parties (COP) is an international climate summit and the primary decision-making forum for addressing climate change. Here, ‘Parties’ refers to the countries that have ratified a treaty called the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). The 29th session of this summit, known as COP29, is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November.
Between 40,000 and 50,000 delegates are expected to attend COP29, including representatives from all UN member states and the European Union. Diplomats, climate scientists, trade union leaders, and environmental activists will also take part.
This year’s conference is labeled the ‘Finance COP’ because delegates are expected to sign off on a new funding target for developed countries to support developing countries in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and dealing with the worsening impacts of climate change.
